May 2021 -May 2022 Blue Boar Ludlow
Been here before…
used the easy online booking system and after some market based retail therapy
lunch here was most welcome. Great welcome, great beer, Black Sheep and Wye
Valley HPA. We shared the stuffed vine leave starter followed by cod and chips
and a moussaka, good potions and very tasty. Staff friendly and attentive.
Taken over from my previous go to pub in Ludlow… this is now it.

4 of us had lunch
in the Blue Boar pub in Ludlow and were very impressed by the the friendliness
of the staff. Even to the extent of offering to bring our food out to us under
umbrellas due to the rain, (we were in their covered area outside). We decided
to eat inside and enjoyed the food immensely and the atmosphere was wonderful.
Would thoroughly recommend this pub for lunch.

good.

Whilst visiting the
Ludlow food festival we booked the Blue Boar for an evening meal.
The service was attentive and friendly and the pub had a good atmosphere
We had the Chicken Souvlaki – Grilled Marinated Skewer of Chicken, Peppers, and
Onion served with Homemade Pitta Bread, Homemade Hummus, Homemade Tzatziki
which was all enjoyable. With the chef going to all the trouble of hand making
this food why oh why spoil it by adding awful frozen chips.

This was an
excellent experience from bumping into a staff member (who happened to be the
son of the owner of where we were staying), Despite not yet being open, he made
a boking for that evening. He mentioned the chef was Greek and when my wife
said she liked Greek food, particularly Briam, it was great to find it was on
the menu that evening. The inside of the pub was good, food was excellent,
service great, and staff serving very chatty and Covid compliant. Great beer
too. Couldn't fault the building, the staff, the chef, the beef or the food,
All first rate If anything too big a portion.

pub! A great welcome from a lovely friendly team of staff. The menu choice was
great. We chose the Chicken souvlaki which was incredible.. And a steak.. Also
tasty! Prompt service.. Great atmosphere.

This is a lovely
pub with lots of character but a pub is only as good as its staff. The staff
here are brilliant. Everyone is friendly. First impressions count for a lot and
we got a greeting from Ben when we arrived which set the tone for the entire
evening. He met us with a smile and was really friendly and welcoming. The meal
was amazing - thank you chef ! I had the fish which seemed to be a small whale
and my husband had the lasagne which he said was the best he had ever had. The
starters were really good quality, a greek salad and a pate dish. The portions
are enormous - you definately get value for money at this restaurant. We have
had several meals in Ludlow over the last few days but this can't be beaten. We
will be back !!!
Date of visit: August 2021
We're so lucky. 2
great places ( lunch and this for dinner) in one day. This is a real
traditional pub with a very long history. They focus on good local drinks
options and fantastic food sourced with local perfect ingredients. There are no
cook chill options. It's all real homemade and so the flavours and options are
fantastic. Some are different from standard fayre, and some are classics done
properly. We've loved every single thing we've had. There's a strong Greek
influence but not exclusively.
Go and enjoy. Love food, love this place

In here now come
because of greek chef the atmosphere of a crematorium food will be good I know
but devoid of absolutely anything else

We couldn’t fault
anything at the Blue Boar. The food was so nice - 10/10, the service by Ruth
was great and the place is quaint. We luckily booked the day before and so glad
we did. If we come to Ludlow again we’ll definitely visit.

My friends live in
Ludlow, and recommended we eat here one evening during our stay. 6 of us sat
outside under a terrace, very nice.
The friend is vegetarian and likes eating here. I had the greek style chicken
slouvaki, highly recommend and lots of it.
Really enjoyed the food, staff and ambience.
Date of visit: July 2021
Friendly helpful
staff, excellent service, and lovely food.
Ate here twice during our week in ludlow.
They have a greek chef, so always a greek speciality on the menu
Souvlaki first night and superb/authentic lamb kleftico on second. Havent had
better one in greece
Very reasonable too.... and did i mention the staff were excellent
Well worth a visit, but be hungry because there's lots of it
Date of visit: July 2021
Good - especially if you like Greek food!
Visited the Blue
Boar twice during our stay. The menu does change slightly with (I think) a few
more options on Friday evenings. We can definitely recommend the feta in filo
with honey - delicious but not on the diet list. Other dishes tried were briam,
stuffed aubergine, souvlaki and kleftiko. I also had home made baklava. Please
be aware though it's not all Greek. Waiting staff were friendly. This
restaurant welcomes dogs, which I think is a good thing to not exclude dog
owners - however, it may be a suggestion to have a separate dog friendly area
as this may put off some potential diners. A good gin menu although pricier
than in another venue. You won't leave hungry! Would return.

Booked by phone for Sunday lunch, bank holiday weekend. Couldn't fault
it, the Sunday roast was superb, I chose pork, my wife roast beef. Both were
excellent, large portions, they didn't skimp on the meat, plenty of veg,
presented well and all served by 3 off the most friendly, helpful lads. All
very covid safe, in fact the lad with the pink tint to his hair insisted a
couple of customers wore masks as they moved about the bar, very commendable.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service, great value.

The story of “kleftiko” or the thieves’
dinner Roughly five hundred years ago, a large number of poor farmers in
Greece were forced to take refuge in
the mountains, fleeing from the authorities because they refused to bow to a
foreign occupation or to the whims of wealthy landowners. They couldn’t pay
their taxes or their debts and in order to survive, they would steal a goat or
else rely on the hospitality of their fellow countrymen, who gave them food.
These hunted men, whose numbers were huge at times, were known as “kleftes”
or thieves, by the authorities. |
In
order to cook their food without being detected by the patrols, they had to
hide the smoke from their cooking fire and the aroma of roasting meat. Nor did
their fugitive existence allow them to remain in the same place for the six or
seven hours necessary to oversee the cooking of their meal. So they used to dig
a hollow in the ground, light a fire in the bottom of it and then cover the
embers with branches and soil. Then they placed the lamb or goat’s meat on top
and covered it with more branches and soil. They slowly roasted the meat in
this earth-oven for several hours with chunks of hard, spicy cheese and the
roasted meat gradually took on the aroma of its covering of bay leaves and
carob leaves, as well as the flavours of oregano and thyme, lemon and wild
garlic. Hours later they returned, uncovered the roast meat and enjoyed their
“thieves’ dinner” or “kleftiko”.
